Prayerwalking the Cuatro Caminos Neighborhood

On this prayerwalk, you will be walking some important streets in the city of Madrid. These streets are lined with small businesses, bars, movie theaters, designer shops and local cafes where many students enjoy spending time with their friends. While you are only virtually exploring these streets via the Internet, directions are still included to help you imagine where you would go and what you would see if you were physically prayerwalking this neighborhood.

1. A bus stop on the "F" line
We begin our journey standing in the Glorieta de Cuatro Caminos. This roundabout connects four streets together and is always bustling with activity.

The roundabout contains the Carrefour Express supermarket, Vodafone phone store, and a McDonald’s. At the edge of this circle, you can find a bus stop on the F line. This is a bus stop where many students gather to ride to their classes at the university of La Complutense.

Please pray that these students would feel God’s presence while waiting at the bus stop. Ask that  they would encounter Christian students who are willing and open to talk with them even on their ride to campus.

"Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with great joy, to the only God our Savior, Jesus Christ our Lord, be glory, majesty, dominion and authority, before all time and now and forever. Amen." Jude 24-25

2. Local restaurants Cruz de Mayo and EMYFA
Now, you will turn onto Calle (street) Santa Engracia. When you cross Calle Bréton de los Herreros, walk until you see Cruz de Mayo Restaurant. As you continue down the street, you will see the EMYFA bar as well, where students go for cheap sandwiches and a variety of beverages. Please pray that friendships between believers and Spanish university students would develop in these locations.

Ask that believers would be examples of "a friend that loves at all times." Proverbs 17:17

3. Newsstand on Santa Engracia Street
After passing EMYFA, walk down the street to a newsstand on the sidewalk. At this location, a variety of magazines, newspapers and small books are sold. Also clearly on display are pornographic magazines.

Please pray that students passing by would not buy these magazines. Young people have become so used to seeing these images every day, but petition that the Lord would stir a desire for purity in their lives. Also, pray that a believing student would share with newsstand employees the good news of Jesus.

“Create in (them) a clean heart O God, and renew a right spirit within (them.)” Psalm 51:10

4. La Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Teresa y Santa Isabel (a church at Metro: Iglesia)
Follow Santa Engracia until you arrive at the metro stop called “Iglesia” (“church"). Walk to the church called Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Teresa y Santa Isabel.

In the name of religion, the Catholic Church burned at the stake hundreds of thousands of innocent Spanish Jews, Moors and Protestants in the 16th century. The Church became associated with bigotry and tyranny and was also tainted by association with the Franco dictatorship up until his death in 1975.

Please pray for the individuals in this church, that it would disturb them that very few young people are among them. Ask that believers in the church and the priest focus on teaching about a relationship with Christ and not just traditions. Pray that the church would create ways to involve more young people. Petition that the many students who walk by this church each day would search for the truth of Jesus.

Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth and the life; no one comes to the Father but through me.” John 14:6

5. La Plaza de Santa Bárbara and Metro: Alonso Martínez
From Metro: Iglesia, continue on Santa Engracia until you reach Metro: Alonso Martínez. Cross Santa Engracia and Calle Sagasta until you reach Plaza Santa Bárbara (it is full of outdoor cafes.) With a bookstore, Burger King, Pizza Hut, and tons of bars and clubs in the area, students flock to “Alonso” all hours of the day and night.

Please pray for the students that you see eating and laughing. Ask the Lord that they will begin asking spiritual questions in their lives.

“I love those who love me, and those who diligently seek me will find me.” Proverbs 8:17

6. Molly Malone's and Metro: Bilbao
Now take Calle Sagasta and walk in the direction of Metro: Bilbao. As you are walking, pray for university students and individuals you see on the street.

When you reach Bilbao, cross Calle Fuencarral, and turn left onto Calle Manuela Malasaña. Walk down the street, and you will see the restaurant Molly Malone’s on your left. Every Thursday night at Molly Malone's is “Intercambio Night,” during which students from different countries practice their language skills with others at the pub.

Please pray that believing students would come to these language exchange events. In these discussions, petition that spiritual conversations
would develop and friendships would be formed.

“How then will they call on Him in whom they have not believed? How will they believe in Him whom they have not heard?” Romans 10:14

7. The Roxy of Calle Fuencarral
Walk back up the street in the direction of Metro: Bilbao, cross the glorieta and turn onto Calle Fuencarral, going towards Metro: Quevedo. As you walk along this street, you will notice a variety of businesses that attract many university students: Bershka (clothing store), Pull-n-Bear (clothing store), the Roxy movie theater, Starbucks and Friday Project (clothing store).

As you walk along this strip of shops, please pray against the secularism that reigns supreme in the hearts of the university students in Spain. Pray that a discontentment with the ways of the world would emerge in their hearts.

“Cast away from you all your transgressions which you have committed and make yourselves a new heart and a new spirit! … Therefore, repent and live.” Ezekiel 18:31-32

8. La Plaza de Olavide
Continue on Calle Fuencarral until you reach the small street of Olid. Turn right on Olid, and the street will curve around and lead you into the plaza. The Plaza de Olavide is the home of wonderful tapas (appetizer) restaurants and a playground and where Spaniards come to enjoy the evening with friends/family.

As you walk around the plaza, please pray for the students that you see sitting with their families or friends enjoying a meal or drink.

“In the last days, God says, I will pour forth my spirit on all mankind; and your sons and daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions and your old men shall dream dreams.” Acts 2:17

9. Journey back to Cuatro Caminos
As you walk back to Metro: Cuatro Caminos via Bravo Murillo street, pray for believing Spanish university students to be bold in sharing the love of Jesus with others. Petition that a desire to join together with other believers for prayer would burn in the hearts of these students all across the city of Madrid.

“These all with one mind were continually devoting themselves to prayer …” Acts. 1:14
